On September 21, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a discussion with journalists in Washington that Ukraine would de-occupy Bakhmut and two other key cities

"We will de-occupy Bakhmut. I think that we will de-occupy two more cities. I will not tell you which cities, sorry. And so we have a plan. A very, very comprehensive plan," Zelenskyy said.

One of the Russian army's logistical arteries in the Bakhmut direction, the Bakhmut-Horlivka highway, is under the fire control of the Ukrainian military.

British intelligence reported that Ukrainian defenders had taken control of the positions in Klishchiivka (7 km southwest of Bakhmut) and Andriivka (10 km southwest of Bakhmut), and the redeployment of Russian airborne forces from Bakhmut to Zaporizhzhia weakened the Russian defense around Bakhmut.
