Ukraine going to get "a lot of land", Trump says following White House talks
U.S. President Donald Trump said after a summit with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Ukraine would regain significant territory
He made the remarks in an interview with Fox News.
Trump emphasized that Ukraine’s NATO membership has always been a “taboo” for Russia, dating back to the Soviet era. “This was long before Putin,” he stressed.
The U.S. president also suggested that relations between Zelenskyy and Putin might be better than expected, adding: “I hope President Putin is going to be good. If he’s not, that’s going to be a rough situation.”
At the same time, Trump said the United States would not send troops to Ukraine, while France, Germany, and the United Kingdom are reportedly considering sending contingents as part of security guarantees for Kyiv.
“They’re [Ukraine] going to get a lot of land…. And I hope Zelenskyy, President Zelenskyy, will do what he has to do. He has to show some flexibility also,” Trump added.
- German Chancellor Friedrich Merz noted that Trump had convinced Russian leader Putin to agree to a meeting with Zelenskyy.
