Ukraine faces shelter shortfall as war threats continue
Ukraine's Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko admits that existing shelters cover only half of the population and efforts are ongoing to expand capacity
He made this statement during the 3rd International Summit of Cities and Regions, as reported by RBC-Ukraine.
"We are actively working on increasing the number of civil protection facilities. Today, there are over 61,000 of them in our country, but this is not enough. This number — 61,000 — can cover and provide protection for only about half of the population of our state," said Klymenko.
According to the Minister, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has put about 20% of previously inadequate protective structures into readiness. As of June 6, more than 40,000 basic shelters have been registered.
"We have created more than 600 primary mobile shelters. This is also a new initiative for Ukraine, and for the world, when there was an urgent need to provide not only underground shelters but also above-ground or semi-buried shelters for our citizens," emphasized the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
