Ukraine experiences significant power shortage due to weather, Russian attacks
Emergency recovery work continues in Ukraine: there is a power shortage in the grid due to low temperatures and damage done by Russian attacks
On December 18, 2022, Ukrenergo, Ukrainian state energy company, shared the information on Telegram.
As of this morning, the process of restoring the Ukrainian energy system continues: nuclear power plants have reached their planned capacity. An exception is the operation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP - it will continue to be in shutdown mode.
"Electricity consumption has increased compared to last Saturday, causing more deficit in the system. The reason is both the damage to the energy infrastructure facilities inflicted during Russia's 9th missile attack and the seasonal temperature drop," Ukrenergo notes.
The company also reports that the authority to establish consumption limits has been transferred to regional operators of the distribution system: if they are exceeded, emergency shutdowns may be applied.
"Emergency restorations of high-voltage and distribution networks and power plants continue throughout Ukraine. However, weather conditions (subzero temperatures, strong wind) complicate repair work," the company adds.
Earlier, on December 16, Russia launched a massive missile attack on Ukraine. During the air alert, air defense operated in some regions of Ukraine. Russian forces launched more than 10 missiles at critical infrastructure in Kharkiv, and damaged Kyiv's energy infrastructure.
At the same time, Ukrenergo declared an emergency situation in the country's energy system.
