Azovstal to be turned into museum: Mariupol mayor talks about new city's economic model after de-occupation
The legitimate mayor of Mariupol, Vadym Boichenko, said that after de-occupation, the city will have less metallurgy and Azovstal will be turned into a museum
The mayor said this in an interview with LIGA.net.
"We are currently working on the future philosophy of the city, its economic model, which will be different than it was before 2022. There is an agreement with big business that they will restore a number of metallurgical businesses. But it will be to a different extent and in a different form," said Boichenko.
According to him, metallurgical production will remain at Illich Steel and Iron Works of Mariupol, which is part of Rinat Akhmetov's group of companies.
"The territory of Azovstal can be an exhibition area, it can host the Mariupol Defense Museum, the Museum of Resistance, the Museum of Tragedy. The territory is very large, and part of it may be used for construction later," the mayor said.
- Mariupol was besieged on March 2, 2022, when Russian troops approached it from the south and began advancing along the Azov coast. On May 16, 2022, military personnel were withdrawn from Azovstal in Mariupol to the temporarily occupied Novoazovsk and Olenivka, thus giving Russia full control over the city.
- According to the Sprotyv, two years after the beginning of the Russian occupation, a significant number of surviving buildings in the city are still not connected to the heating system. There are also problems with electricity, water supply and garbage collection in Mariupol.
