On Wednesday, September 24, Ukraine and Syria signed a joint communiqué on the restoration of diplomatic relations
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the information.
.“We welcome this important step and are ready to support the Syrian people on their path to stability,” Zelenskyy said.
He added that during the talks, he discussed in detail with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa promising areas for cooperation, security threats to both countries, and the importance of countering them.
“We agreed to build our relations on the basis of mutual respect and trust,” Zelenskyy concluded.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry added that the communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations was signed by Foreign Ministers Andrii Sybiha and Asaad al-Shaibani in the presence of the leaders of Ukraine and Syria.

During a visit to Damascus in late December 2024, after the fall of the Assad regime, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha held talks with the country's new leadership and allowed for the restoration of diplomatic relations.
- On September 21, Syria’s Supreme Electoral Commission announced that the first parliamentary elections since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime will be held on October 5, 2025.
