Ukraine and Russia’s stances “closer but still far apart” — Rubio
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says that the Trump administration's efforts have led to a rapprochement between Russia and Ukraine, but they are still far apart
He said this in an interview with Fox News.
Rubio emphasized that Russia’s war against Ukraine has no military solution.
He stated that Putin cannot capture all of Ukraine, and Ukraine cannot push Russian forces back to their 2014 positions. While the positions of both countries have moved closer, he noted, they still remain far apart.
According to the Secretary of State, a real breakthrough in the peace process is needed soon, as President Donald Trump “will have to make a decision about how much more time we would dedicate this.” He added that there are "even more important issues" in the world that require attention.
Rubio stated that he was not saying the war in Ukraine was unimportant, but what is happening with China is "more important for the future of the world." He also mentioned Iran's nuclear ambitions and noted that many things are happening globally. Therefore, he said, something needs to happen soon to make progress; otherwise, the president will have to make a decision.
- As reported, the U.S. State Department announced that the United States will "adjust its approach" to efforts to stop the war between Russia and Ukraine and plans to take a less active role, though it will not distance itself from the issue.
