Ukraine allocates over $35 million to maintain Chornobyl shelter
On Tuesday, February 18, Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers allocated over 1.5 billion UAH (around 35 million USD) to maintain the Chornobyl shelter in a safe condition
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal reported the information.
“Today, the government is allocating over 1.5 billion UAH to maintain the Chornobyl shelter in a safe condition. We are increasing funding by 139 million compared to 2024,” the prime minister wrote.
He recalled the Russian attack on the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant shelter, calling it an attempt by Russia to intimidate Ukraine, Europe, and the world. According to Shmyhal, there is currently no radiation threat, and efforts to eliminate the consequences of the attack are ongoing.
Additionally, the Cabinet of Ministers approved a decision that will allow Ukraine to secure a €400 million loan from the European Investment Bank, which will be used primarily for energy-efficient reconstruction.
- On Tuesday morning, February 18, efforts to mitigate the Russian drone strike on the Chornobyl sarcophagus continue. Rescuers have been battling the fire for five days.
