Two killed in shooting at Chisinau airport: Moldovan media say attacker is Wagner soldier
One of the passengers opened fire at Chisinau airport. According to preliminary information, the attacker was a citizen of Tajikistan. Two people were killed as a result of the incident
This was reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Moldova.
It is noted that the foreign citizen, who was banned from entering Moldova, used firearms.
After he was not allowed to enter the country, the man was escorted to a 'sterile' area, where he had to wait for a flight back. At this time, he grabbed the border guard’s weapon and fatally wounded two people.
The FULGER special police unit neutralized the attacker, he was injured and is now receiving medical care.
Due to the incident, all flights scheduled for June 30 have been delayed at the airport. Airport staff and passengers were evacuated from the building.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that a border guard and an airport security officer were killed in the shooting.
“Today, a serious incident took place at the airport, during which a foreign citizen, who was denied entry to the country by the authorities of the Republic of Moldova, fatally shot two people - a border guard and an airport security officer. Our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the victims. The loss of loved ones is a huge pain for families. This is a sad day for all of us,” she wrote.
According to Moldovan media, the shooting at the airport could have been opened by a Russian citizen who arrived in Moldova from Turkey.
However, according to the Moldovan Prime Minister, the attacker was a 43-year-old Tajik citizen.
“A 43-year-old Tajik citizen was denied entry to Moldova for security reasons. While escorting him to the ‘sterile’ zone for return, he shot a border guard and an airport security officer with a gun taken from a border police officer,” he said.
He also noted that one passenger was injured and is under medical supervision.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Oleh Nikolenko, said that they are monitoring the situation at Chisinau airport.
“Diplomats are interacting with the Moldovan authorities to get details and find out if there are any Ukrainians,” he added.
The spokesperson noted that Ukrainians can contact the Ukrainian embassy's hotline for assistance: +37360170896.
