Trump is banned from running for president in another state
A high-ranking official in Maine has banned former US President Donald Trump from running in the 2024 primaries
CNN reported the information.
Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows has suspended her decision pending a possible appeal in state court, which the Trump team has said it intends to file.
The decision makes Maine the second state to remove Trump from office after the Colorado Supreme Court issued a similar ruling.
Bellows, a Democrat, made the decision public on Thursday, December 28, after presiding over an administrative hearing earlier this month on Trump's eligibility for office. A bipartisan group of former state lawmakers filed a lawsuit against Trump.
"I do not reach this conclusion lightly," Bellows wrote. "Democracy is sacred … I am mindful that no Secretary of State has ever deprived a presidential candidate of ballot access based on Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment (to the US Constitution - ed.). I am also mindful, however, that no presidential candidate has ever before engaged in insurrection," she said.
The 14th Amendment to the US Constitution states that a candidate who has been involved in "inciting violence against the US government" (the storming of the US Capitol on January 6, 2021) is prohibited from running for office.
Trump's campaign spokesman Steven Cheung accused Bellows of being a "virulent leftist" who "decided to interfere in the presidential election."
"The record establishes that Mr. Trump, over the course of several months and culminating on January 6, 2021, used a false narrative of election fraud to inflame his supporters and direct them to the Capitol to prevent certification of the 2020 election and the peaceful transfer of power," Bellows argued, adding that her ruling on Thursday would be delayed until the Maine Superior Court, the trial court, rules.
