Truce over grain exports from Ukrainian ports could be a trap - diplomat Khara
Oleksandr Khara, an expert at the Center for Defense Strategies, has said that in order to open up Ukrainian ports and re-start grain exports throughout Ukraine, a ceasefire along the entire frontline is needed.
He expressed his opinion with Espreso.
"It is not beneficial for Russia for Ukraine to open its ports and start selling its grain. Because then Russia will not be able to exert pressure on the international community. This is a strategic goal. However, there is also a tactical goal that may outweigh the strategic one. In order to open the ports, it is necessary to stop firing. Because it cannot be that everything is calm in Odesa, and hostilities are going on in other territories of Ukraine. Therefore, a truce with Russia for the export of grain from Ukrainian ports can become a big trap for Ukraine," Khara explained.
The diplomat compared a possible truce regarding the export of Ukrainian grain from the ports to the Minsk agreements.
"This truce will become something similar to Minsk-3. Any violation of the agreements will be sharply criticized. And Ukraine is in a weaker position in this situation. Just as it was with the Minsk agreements, when small arms and mortars were fired, and then Russia declares that it does not consider this a violation of agreements. The same may happen with the truce regarding the export of grain from the ports of Ukraine," he added.
