"Trial" of Ukrainian fighters in Mariupol will be mockery of justice - US State Department
The US has condemned the plans of the occupiers to hold a staged tribunal over the defenders of Azovstal in occupied Mariupol.
This was said by the representative of the US State Department, Ned Price.
"By planning to hold so-called “tribunals” in Russia-controlled Mariupol against Ukraine’s brave defenders, the Kremlin is attempting to deflect responsibility for President Putin’s war of aggression and distract from overwhelming evidence of the atrocities Russian forces have committed in Ukraine.
The planned show trials are illegitimate and a mockery of justice, and we strongly condemn them," he noted.
Price says that all service members of the Armed Forces, including domestic and foreign volunteers who are included in the Armed Forces, are entitled to prisoner of war status and are entitled to protection under the Geneva Conventions.
So the US once again called on Moscow to fulfill its obligations under international law, reminding that it will continue to firmly support the Ukrainian people who are defending their freedom.
