There will be no quick accession to EU, but negotiations will begin – MEP
The window of opportunity for Ukraine's European integration is open and should be used, but joining the EU will take a long time
This was stated on Espreso by Estonian MEP Marina Kaljurand.
"I was very disappointed when Ukraine asked for candidate status and received it only three months later. You should have received it immediately - in March, when you announced the application. For three months we talked about a status that means nothing legally – it's just a strong political signal," she said.
The EP member said that she does not see the willingness to expand in the EU today – this does not apply to Ukraine only.
"I feel that there are people who consider the previous expansion to 9 countries a mistake. I am afraid that there will be no quick accession of Ukraine to the EU, but negotiations will begin. A lot will depend on you, on how we can help you – with experience and by convincing fellow skeptics. Ukraine will have to adopt all EU laws, enter the common market. This will not happen in a month or two. It will take more time – we need to prepare for it, we need to start doing it," Kaljurand emphasized.
She believes that Ukraine now has a window of opportunity.
"If there was no war, we wouldn't be talking about membership, that's also a fact. This window of opportunity is open and it should be used. You have many friends who support you not only with words, but also with actions, and will help speed this process up. I would like to say to the Ukrainians – you will be in the EU when the day comes – I don't know when, but be patient. It will take time, because reforms are needed throughout the country. You must be patient and with the help of those who support you, you will achieve this goal. The Ukrainian people have very clearly stated where they want to see their future," the MEP concluded.
