Szijjártó says Hungary will block further EU aid to Ukraine

Hungary will block the next tranche of EUR 500 million of financial assistance to Ukraine and will not support further sanctions against Russia

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said this at a briefing in Vienna on May 17, Bloomberg reports.

"It’s fair to say that we’ve had enough," he said and listed three reasons that formed the basis for Hungary's decision.

Among them is Ukraine's decision to add OTP Bank Nyrt., Hungary’s largest lender, to a list that shames companies that continue to do business in Russia.

Szijjártó also said that Ukraine allegedly restricts the educational rights of ethnic Hungarians in Zakarpattia. Finally, he pointed to a Washington Post report that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy allegedly spoke about blowing up the Druzhba pipeline, which supplies oil from Russia to Hungary via Ukraine.

"I want to make clear that as long as Ukraine keeps OTP on its list of international war sponsors, we can’t support decisions requiring new economic and financial sacrifice on the part of the European Union and its member states," Szijjarto said.

"The same goes for sanctions," he added.
