Swedish Prime Minister gives Ukraine a copy of Charles XII's letter recognizing independence of Zaporizhian Sich

Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson has handed over a 'special gift' to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky: a copy of a letter from Sweden's King Charles XII dating to 1711 on the recognition of Zaporizhian Sich's independence.

She announced this during a joint briefing with the head of the Ukrainian state in Kyiv.

In the letter, Charles XII gives instructions to the Swedish ambassador in Constantinople to recognize Zaporizhian Sich as an independent state, a subject of international law, in order to avoid oppression from the Moscow tsar. A copy of the letter was sent from the National Archives of Sweden.

"I think it fits well into the modern political context. Already at the beginning of the 18th century, our Swedish king was impressed by Cossacks and Cossack democracy," Andersson emphasized.

Volodymyr Zelensky read a part of the letter, which stated that the King of Sweden orders "all of Ukraine and the Zaporizhian army to return their ancient freedom, possession of their land and its former borders, so that from now on this people will become an independent state and will never again be subject to submission or protection of the Moscow Tsar".
