Sweden’s $1.6 billion aid package to Ukraine: Gripen jets and Saab 340 AEW&C potentially in the mix
Sweden is providing Ukraine with its largest aid package to date, which, in addition to armored vehicles and air defense systems, includes equipment and machinery for an airbase
Defense Express writes that Sweden has announced its largest military aid package to Ukraine, valued at approximately $1.6 billion (16 billion SEK). This marks Sweden’s 19th aid package since 2022 and accounts for 20% of its total military support to Ukraine, which now reaches $8 billion.
To fund this package, Sweden had to adjust its budget, reallocating resources from planned 2026 assistance. The aid breakdown includes $920 million for ammunition, air defense systems, armored vehicles, naval equipment, satellite communication systems, and infantry gear. Priority will be given to short supply chains and Nordic and European defense manufacturers, making it likely that Nammo will secure contracts for ammunition, while Saab’s RBS 70 MANPADS and Giraffe radars may be included in air defense supplies. Additional CV90 IFVs from BAE Systems Hägglunds are also a strong possibility. Another $500 million will be allocated to international aid programs and direct procurement of Ukrainian weaponry under the “Danish model.”
Sweden is also supplying $50 million worth of equipment from its own stockpiles, including around 100 units of airbase maintenance and operational equipment. This could hint at the potential transfer of Gripen fighter jets, as Sweden has already set aside spare parts for 14 Gripen C/D aircraft intended for Ukraine. Another possibility is the long-range radar and command aircraft Saab 340 AEW&C (ACS890), which has been previously mentioned but not yet delivered.
