UK sanctions Russian troops deploying chemical weapons on battlefield in Ukraine
On October 8, the United Kingdom announced new sanctions against Russian troops deploying chemical weapons on the battlefield
According to the British government's website, the sanctions target Russia’s Radiological Chemical and Biological Defence (CBR) troops, their commander Igor Kirillov, and two military research labs.
The measures include an asset freeze and a travel ban to the UK for individuals, as well as asset freezes for organizations. These restrictions apply to all assets within the UK and to UK citizens' assets worldwide.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated that using chemical weapons is a serious violation of international law and the Chemical Weapons Convention.
“The UK will not sit idly by whilst Putin and his mafia state ride roughshod over international law, including the Chemical Weapons Convention. I have made it my personal mission to challenge this malign activity, and I will not back down,” he stated.
British Defense Secretary John Healey stated that the UK strongly condemns Russia's actions and will keep supporting Ukraine.
“Our message to Putin and his regime is clear: you cannot break international law without facing the consequences.
The UK is cracking down on those responsible for these horrific chemical attacks in Ukraine. Our support for Ukraine is ironclad and will continue for as long as it takes,” John Healey added.
- On September 26, the United Kingdom imposed sanctions on five vessels and two companies involved in the export of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG).
