Trump signals possible sanctions on Russia if Kremlin rejects peace
President Donald Trump has indicated he may approve tough new sanctions against Russia if Moscow refuses to pursue peace, highlighting the U.S. commitment to ending the war in Ukraine
He said this in an interview with NBC News.
Trump stated that his decision on sanctions would depend on Russia’s willingness to negotiate a peace agreement. The proposed sanctions, introduced by Senator Lindsey Graham, could have a devastating impact on the Russian economy.
Trump told NBC News that the U.S. is focused on achieving a peaceful resolution between Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing, “it depends on whether or not Russia is behaving toward coming to a peace. We want a peace deal. We want Russia and Ukraine to agree to a deal.” He added that the United States remains committed to saving lives and reducing the costs associated with supporting the ongoing conflict.
Senator Graham’s bill, which Trump is considering, includes severe measures such as sanctions targeting Russia’s banking and energy sectors, as well as a 500% tariff on imports from countries that continue to buy Russian energy resources. These restrictions could take effect if the Kremlin refuses to agree to a peaceful settlement of the war in Ukraine.
- American officials have completed the development of new economic sanctions against Russia; however, it is unknown whether the new sanctions package will be approved by U.S. President Donald Trump.
