“Test of trust”: Macron tells Trump to impose sanctions if Russia rejects ceasefire
French President Emmanuel Macron has called on his American counterpart, Donald Trump, to impose sanctions on Russia if it becomes clear that Moscow is "not ready for peace"
He made this statement in Singapore during his tour of Southeast Asia, according to BFMTV.
Commenting on the potential second round of ceasefire talks between Ukraine and Russia, Macron urged both Washington and Moscow to take responsibility.
According to President Macron, the United States should impose sanctions on Russia if the Kremlin proves to be “not ready for peace,” calling it “a test of trust for the Americans.”
“I spoke with President Trump 48 hours ago, and he expressed his impatience. Now the question is: what should we do about it? We, the Europeans, are ready,” Macron emphasized.
He also underlined that the European stance on the ceasefire remains “consistent and reliable.”
“We have not changed — we still believe in the international order, cooperation, open trade, and respect for the rules,” Macron added.
- Earlier, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt stated that U.S. President Donald Trump hopes Ukraine and Russia will make progress in upcoming negotiations.
