Sanctions against Rosatom: A key to halting Russia’s nuclear and economic expansion
Valentyn Nalyvaichenko, a Member of the Parliament of Ukraine and former head of the Security Service of Ukraine, stated that sanctions against Rosatom would not only halt Russia’s billion-dollar revenues but also hinder the development of technologies in Russian nuclear energy and nuclear weapons
He said this on the air of Espreso.
"Rosatom is a very effective lever of pressure on the Russian Federation. Members of the Ukrainian Parliament, and I personally, have always insisted on the priority of imposing sanctions specifically against Rosatom and Russia’s nuclear energy sector. It should be noted that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) holds all the necessary authority because, without its licenses, Russia will not receive permits abroad for construction, repairs, or anything related to nuclear power plants. Unfortunately, under previous administrations in the U.S. and other European countries, sanctions against Russia’s nuclear energy sector were never implemented," the Ukrainian MP noted.
According to him, sanctions against Rosatom are a highly sensitive issue for Russia. That is why the Russians are persistently trying to engage with Elon Musk, claiming they are ready to bring their small-scale nuclear power station all the way to Mars. They understand that, unlike previous administrations, Trump may indeed impose sanctions against Rosatom. If that happens, it would spell the end not only of Russia’s billion-dollar revenues but also cause significant setbacks in the development of technologies pursued by Rosatom.
"By the way, Rosatom is also responsible for nuclear weapons in Russia. Accordingly, this is not just ‘Koschei’s needle’—inside that needle, there is yet another needle that Russia has carefully concealed within Rosatom. That is precisely where pressure should be applied, in order to force Russian troops to cease fire and withdraw from occupied Ukrainian territories," Nalyvaichenko concluded.
