Russia’s war claims lives of 204 Ukrainian artists and 107 media workers
Ukraine's Culture Ministry has updated the list of artists, cultural workers, and media workers who have been killed during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine
The Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications reported the information on its website.
The Ministry of Culture keeps track of artists and media workers who have died because of Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine. Since February 24, 2022, the war has taken the lives of 204 artists and 107 media workers from Ukraine and other countries.
“These numbers show more than just how many lives were lost – they remind us of a tragic part of our history. Just like in the 1920s and 1930s when the Stalinist regime destroyed a generation of Ukrainian artists, Russia is now deliberately targeting Ukraine’s cultural leaders. The group called the Executed Renaissance gave the world great works of literature, painting, music, and theater. These artists were the pride of our nation. Today, we are losing not only talented Ukrainians but also a part of our soul, because every artist is a unique person who added to Ukrainian culture,” said the ministry.
The ministry said that journalists working in Ukraine today take big risks to share important news, investigations, and reports. They record the events of the war to give Ukraine and the world true information about what is happening. Media workers work around the clock to collect proof of Russia’s crimes and show the strength, heroism, and bravery of Ukraine’s defenders.
“Systematic crimes against journalists and media committed by Russia pose a serious threat to freedom of speech and information security, undermining democratic values and human rights,” the ministry added.
