Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Russia's new offensive could leave Donbas deserted.

Russia wants to turn Donbas into ashes.
"The current Russian offensive in Donbas can make this region uninhabited. Popasna, Bakhmut, Lyman, Lysychansk, Severodonetsk. They want to turn them into ashes. Like Volnovakha, like Mariupol. In cities and communities closer to the Russian border, in Donetsk and Luhansk, they gather everyone who can replace those killed and wounded in their contingent. All this, including the deportation of our people and the mass killings of civilians, is an obvious policy of genocide pursued by Russia," said Volodymyr Zelensky.
