Russian troops execute unarmed Ukrainian prisoner of war in Donetsk region
The occupying Russian forces have executed an unarmed captured Ukrainian serviceman in the Volnovakha district of Donetsk region
This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.
It is noted that on April 11, 2025, three Ukrainian Armed Forces servicemen were carrying out combat duties at a position near the village of Rozdolne in the Volnovakha district. During an assault, the occupying Russian soldiers captured them. One of the unarmed Ukrainian soldiers was executed by Russian troops using automatic weapons.
“Urgent investigative and search actions are being carried out to establish all the circumstances of the incident and to identify the individuals among Russian military personnel responsible for committing this crime. The execution of prisoners of war is a gross violation of the Geneva Conventions and qualifies as a serious international crime,” emphasized the Office of the Prosecutor General.
Under the procedural guidance of the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a pre-trial investigation has been launched into the war crime resulting in death (Part 2, Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
Ukrainian Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, wrote that the actions of the Russian troops constitute a violation of the Geneva Convention on the treatment of prisoners of war, norms of international humanitarian law, and are a grave international crime.
“I have already sent letters to the UN and the ICRC. The international community must act and respond immediately! Russian crimes must be documented, and the perpetrators held accountable! It is necessary to exert pressure on the Russian Federation to stop its arbitrary executions of Ukrainian prisoners of war!” he stated.
