Russian strike on U.S.-owned plant in Dnipro spills 300 tons of oil onto city streets
On Monday, January 5, the invading Russian forces struck an American enterprise in Dnipro with drones
The attack became known around 1:00 p.m., reported Vladyslav Haivanenko, acting head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration.
"As a result of the UAV attack in Dnipro, a fire broke out. An enterprise was damaged. Cars and power lines were also destroyed," the statement reads.
As reported by Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov, the American enterprise Bunge, which produces Oleyna oil, was affected.
"As a result of the drone attack on Dnipro's roads, 300 tons of oil spilled! Utility workers are cleaning up, spreading sand and mixture, but passage along the Embankment will be impossible for about 2-3 days," Filatov writes.
There were no official reports of casualties or deaths.
"This strike is another example of the deliberate destruction of civilian infrastructure, which has not only economic but also serious environmental consequences. Attacks on food industry enterprises are systematic in nature and aimed at creating food shortages in Ukraine. At the same time, such strikes lead to contamination of soil, water, and transport infrastructure, which poses a long-term threat to the environment and human health," the Center for Countering Disinformation writes about the Russian strike.
The Center for Countering Disinformation recalled that Russia had previously struck a civilian vessel in the Odesa district, as a result of which sunflower oil entered the estuary and then into the Black Sea waters. Oil slicks were recorded on the water surface at that time, and birds affected by this had to be rescued and sent for rehabilitation.
"Russia continues its environmental terror against Ukraine and the Black Sea. Strikes on ports, civilian industrial and logistics facilities deliberately create large-scale environmental risks, the consequences of which extend far beyond the combat zone," the message states.
FM Sybiha: "The attack was deliberate"
Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha emphasized that the terrorist strike on the civilian plant was targeted.
"This attack was not a mistake—it was deliberate, as the Russians attempted to strike this facility multiple times. Russia has been targeting American businesses in Ukraine systemically. Russian strikes last year damaged Boeing offices in Kyiv, a major American-owned electronics manufacturer in Zakarpattia, and other facilities. Throughout the full-scale war, approximately half of US Chamber members in Ukraine saw damage or destruction to their facilities on various scales," Sybiha writes.
According to the minister, such strikes demonstrate that Putin is ignoring Donald Trump's peace efforts.
"This is why it is so urgent to advance the peace process —and Ukraine is ready to move it forward—as well as to strengthen Ukraine's air defense and increase sanctions pressure. Moscow's refusal to reciprocate Ukraine's constructive steps toward peace must come at a cost and the Kremlin must feel that this cost is serious," Sybiha added.
Russia conducted an attack on Ukrainian territory with missiles and UAVs on the night of January 5. Air raid alerts were declared in several regions. There are killed and injured in the capital and the Kyiv region.
