Death toll from Russian strike on Kyiv on July 31 rises to 31, including children

On the night of July 31, Russian occupation forces attacked Ukraine with missiles and Shahed drones. In Kyiv, 31 people were killed, including three children, and 159 civilians were injured, among them 16 children

Attack on Kyiv

At 10:39 a.m., Head of the Kyiv City Military Administration Tymur Tkachenko reported that recovery efforts are still ongoing in the Sviatoshynskyi district. Rescuers have retrieved three more bodies. As of now, 31 people have been confirmed dead following the Russian attack on the night of July 31.

State Emergency Service (SES) spokesperson Pavlo Petrov reported that as of 9 a.m., search and rescue operations are still ongoing in the Sviatoshynskyi district. According to him, people may still be trapped under the rubble.

“Rescuers worked through the night... The work continues. At this moment, we can confirm that the body of another deceased young man has been recovered. So far, there are 25 confirmed deaths at this location, including three children. Across Kyiv, the total number of fatalities has increased to 28. This is currently the only site where search and rescue operations are still underway—operations at the other site were completed yesterday, with three fatalities there,” he said.

“Right now, about 90 rescuers and 40 units of various equipment are working on site. This includes engineering and rescue vehicles, as well as climbing teams operating on upper levels. We hope to complete search and rescue operations today and begin emergency recovery work,” the spokesperson added.

Earlier, Tkachenko, reported that as of 07:52 a.m. on August 1, the death toll from the Russian strike had risen to 27.

As of 9:40 p.m. on July 31, the confirmed number of fatalities in Kyiv stood at 16. According to updated information, 159 people were injured.

According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, as of 9:24 p.m. on July 31, 15 people were killed in the Russian attack on Kyiv, including two children aged 6 and 17. The number of injured rose to 155, among them 16 children.

Solomianskyi district

As a result of the attack, the most severe destruction was recorded in Solomianskyi district, where 101 buildings were damaged. A total of 2,822 windows were shattered, and 20 roofs require repairs. So far, 180 tons of construction debris have been removed from the district, and 624 people have requested assistance.

Sviatoshynskyi district

A Russian missile destroyed the entrance section of a multi-story residential building, and other facilities were also damaged. Nearly 5,600 windows were shattered. About 1,070 cubic meters of debris have been removed from the site.

It is reported that 232 people have already applied for financial aid (UAH 10,000), and 7 have applied for housing rental compensation.

Shevchenkivskyi district

The most severely affected was a residential building on V. Makukha Street. Its roof was completely destroyed and more than 175 windows were shattered. Specialists have already dismantled hazardous roof elements and sealed around 120 window openings. Approximately 60 cubic meters of construction debris have been removed from the site. Gas supply has been temporarily cut off, while cold water supply has been restored in 80% of the apartments. Inspections are ongoing.

Holosiivskyi district

The strike damaged 44 buildings and 4 educational institutions. Restoration efforts continue: utility workers have removed more than 40 cubic meters of debris and are working to restore gas supply.

Today, residents have submitted 116 applications for assistance.

At 7:41 p.m., Head of the Kyiv City Military Administration Tymur Tkachenko wrote on his Telegram channel that information had come in about the 15th person killed in Kyiv as a result of the Russian attack.

“Unfortunately, the worst-case predictions about the number of people possibly trapped under the rubble are being confirmed. The search and rescue operation continues,” he added.

Later, Tkachenko added that two of the victims were children.

“Today, the Russians once again added to their grim record of killing children. The world’s number one child-killing army,” he wrote.

At 7:45 p.m., emergency services confirmed the updated toll. Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported that the number of people killed in the Russian strike on Kyiv had risen to 15, including one child. A total of 145 people were injured, including 14 children.

Head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, reported that as of 6:25 p.m., the death toll had risen to 13. Debris clearance is ongoing in the Sviatoshynskyi district. 

Kyiv police spokesperson Anna Strashok earlier confirmed that 11 people were killed in the enemy attack, according to Espreso correspondent Kateryna Halko.

“There are more casualties, according to our data, in the Sviatoshynskyi district, at a location where part of a nine-story residential building was completely destroyed by a missile strike. We have a list of people who are currently unreachable, but we won’t disclose names until the information is verified,” said State Emergency Service (SES) spokesperson Oleksandr Khorunzhyi on Espreso TV.

He added that in the Solomianskyi district, rescuers are working at two locations, where one body has been found.

“There is also information that another body has been found under the rubble in the Sviatoshynskyi district, and a rescuer is trying to retrieve it. As for the injured, the number has exceeded 90 people, including 11 children,” Khorunzhyi said.

He noted that over 600 tons of construction debris have been removed from one location.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as of 3:30 p.m., the number of injured had risen to 90. Search and rescue operations near the destroyed residential buildings are ongoing.

“SES workers have already cleared nearly 500 tons of construction debris and removed 36 destroyed vehicles. Four canine units are involved in the search for people under the rubble. Police and SES psychologists have provided assistance to nearly 100 affected individuals,” the ministry reported.

At 11:03 p.m. on July 30, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported explosions in the city and air defense activity.

As of 11:49 p.m., head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said debris had fallen in two locations in the Solomianskyi district. Cars were on fire at one of the sites. No reports of casualties had been received.

"The Russians continue to strike, we now have information on five locations in the Solomianskyi district. A fire broke out at an educational institution, cars are burning, and debris fell onto the 9th floor of a residential building," he wrote at 12:03 a.m.

At 12:06 a.m., a fire was reported in an apartment on the 5th floor in the Solomianskyi district. Information about casualties is being clarified.

As of 12:32 a.m., Vitali Klitschko reported that medics were called to the Solomianskyi district.

“Damage or fires caused by the Russian attack have been recorded at six locations in the Solomianskyi district and one in the Sviatoshynskyi district. The attack on the capital is ongoing. Do not leave shelters,” he wrote at 12:42 a.m.

At 12:45 a.m., it was reported that one person was hospitalized in the Solomianskyi district of the capital.

As of 01:00 a.m., we have about ten locations affected by the enemy attack. The enemy is striking civilian infrastructure with attack drones. The Solomianskyi district has suffered the most,” Tkachenko reported.

In the Solomianskyi district, the following incidents were recorded:

  • Fire in a multi-story residential building
  • Fire outbreak near a residential building
  • Fire in an educational institution
  • Warehouses and several non-residential buildings burning at various addresses
  • Debris from drones fell in two locations — near a building and onto a car

At 01:40 a.m., the head of the Regional Military Administration reported that the number of injured had risen to four, including a mother and child.

Later, information emerged about five wounded.

At 02:13 a.m., Tymur Tkachenko reported that the number of injured had increased to six.

At 05:08 a.m., Tkachenko reported the consequences of the missile attack on Kyiv: “Damage in the Shevchenkivskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts. Residential buildings.”

At 05:16 a.m., Vitali Klitschko said medics were called to the Sviatoshynskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts.

“In the Shevchenkivskyi district, a blast wave shattered windows in the children's wing of a medical facility. No casualties,” he added.

At 05:29 a.m., the mayor reported that a residential building in the Sviatoshynskyi district had been damaged as a result of the Russian attack on the capital.

As of 05:55 a.m., Tymur Tkachenko reported that a house and a car were on fire in the Holosiivskyi district due to a missile strike.

In the Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi districts, residential buildings were hit.

In the Shevchenkivskyi district, windows in an apartment building were damaged and cars were burned.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Kyiv showed the aftermath of the Russian attack on the capital.

As of 06:09 a.m., Vitali Klitschko reported that a section of a residential building in the Sviatoshynskyi district had been destroyed. Emergency services were working at the scene. Fires also broke out in several non-residential buildings.

In the Solomianskyi district, apartments in several buildings were damaged. Cars caught fire. There were also fires and damage at multiple non-residential sites.

In the Holosiivskyi district, buildings were damaged, including a school and a kindergarten.

In the Shevchenkivskyi district, the blast wave shattered windows in the children's wing of a medical facility.

“At present, 20 city residents are known to have been injured. Eight of them were hospitalized, while others received medical help on site. Ambulance crews continue working at the scenes,” Klitschko added.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy showed the aftermath of Russia’s missile strike on the capital.

As of 06:27 a.m., Kyiv Regional Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko reported that the number of injured in Kyiv had risen to 27 according to preliminary data.

Vitali Klitschko also confirmed the number of injured at 27, noting that 17 of them were hospitalized.

At 06:37 a.m., information emerged that rescuers had recovered the body of a deceased woman.

Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Ihor Klymenko, reported that among the injured in the capital were three police officers who were responding to a call.

As of 06:54 a.m., Vitali Klitschko reported that the number of injured in Kyiv had risen to 43.

“26 of them have been hospitalized in the city’s medical facilities,” he added.

Ten minutes later, information appeared reporting 48 injured, with 29 in hospitals.

At 07:05 a.m., Tymur Tkachenko announced a second fatality from the Russian attack.

By 07:13 a.m., Tkachenko reported that the combined Russian attack had affected more than 27 locations in Kyiv.

“We have 52 injured, nearly 30 hospitalized. Among them are 9 children. Unfortunately, the number will likely rise. Two Kyiv residents died as a result of a targeted strike by Russian terrorists. This is also probably not the final count. We are currently focusing on saving lives and organizing aid,” the head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration added.

By 07:42 a.m., Tymur Tkachenko reported 6 dead.

“Four of them are in the Sviatoshynskyi district, two in Solomianskyi. Among the dead is a six-year-old boy. The rescue operation continues,” Tkachenko said.

As of 08:51 a.m., Vitali Klitschko reported that people may still be trapped under the rubble of a residential building in the Sviatoshynskyi district, and rescue efforts are ongoing.

He also added that help centers have been set up in the city to assist all those affected.

Espreso journalist Maksym Halashko visited the Sviatoshynskyi district and reported on the aftermath of the Russian attack.

“We’re still in the Sviatoshynskyi district, but now in a different courtyard. Around 4 a.m., a Shahed drone hit a car here, which then caused other vehicles to catch fire. Windows were shattered in two or three sections of a residential building and in a nearby lyceum. The school has a bomb shelter, which, according to the principal, was already overcrowded that night. One man was hospitalized with a severe leg injury after failing to reach the shelter in time. A child was also injured, but the wounds were minor. I should note that nine children were injured in Kyiv during the night — the highest number since the start of the full-scale invasion,” Halashko said.

As of 10:25 a.m., Tymur Tkachenko reported that the number of injured had risen to 82, with 44 people hospitalized.

“A 6-year-old boy died in the ambulance — they couldn’t save him. At least 10 children were injured, 5 of them are in hospitals. The Russians did this. A 5-month-old baby girl was wounded — the Russians targeted her. The data is to be updated,” Tkachenko emphasized.

He added that more than 100 sites were damaged, including residential buildings, schools, kindergartens, medical facilities, and a university.

As of 11:02 a.m., the death toll had risen to seven.

"Russia's night attack took the lives of seven Kyiv residents," said Tymur Tkachenko.

Damage to railway infrastructure

 According to Ukrainian Railways, Russian overnight strikes on the capital damaged rail infrastructure in one of the districts. Trains in that area are temporarily being pulled by diesel locomotives.

"Employees and passengers were not injured. All relevant services are already working at the site, and full traffic restoration on the section is expected around 9 a.m. Long-distance trains are running on schedule. However, there may be minor delays for Kyiv City Express trains in the direction from Sviatoshyn to Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi Station," the company said.

Kyiv region

 Head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration Mykola Kalashnyk reported that in the Bucha district, the Russian attack damaged three store buildings and warehouse facilities.

No hits to critical infrastructure were recorded.

Poltava region

As reported by the head of the Poltava Regional Military Administration, Volodymyr Kohut, debris from a Russian drone fell in the Kremenchuk district, causing a fire in an outbuilding.

“The blast wave damaged a private house. According to the State Emergency Service, the fire has been extinguished. Fortunately, there were no casualties,” the head of the administration added.

Dnipropetrovsk region

According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, Russian troops attacked the Pavlohrad district of Dnipropetrovsk region during the night. Rescuers extinguished fires that broke out at agricultural and transport enterprises.
