Russian combined attack on Kyiv kills civilians, destroys homes
On the evening of June 22, the Russian occupying army launched drones and missiles against Ukraine, causing deaths and injuries in Kyiv and the Kyiv region
Attack on Kyiv
At 12:52 p.m., Kyiv Mayor Klitschko reported 28 people were injured in the Russian attack. Seven people were confirmed dead.
“Twelve of the injured are in city hospitals. The others were treated in hospital emergency rooms or at the scene. Search and rescue efforts are still underway at a five-story building in the Shevchenkivskyi district,” he wrote.
According to Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs, several districts of the capital — Shevchenkivskyi, Podilskyi, Holosiivskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Solomianskyi, and Darnytskyi — were affected by the overnight strikes.
The most severe damage was recorded in the Shevchenkivskyi district, where an entire section of a residential high-rise was destroyed. As of 07:00 a.m., authorities reported five deaths. However, the spokesperson for the State Emergency Service told Espreso that there was confirmed information about four fatalities in the capital.
Later, it was reported that the death toll from the Russian missile strike on the building in the Shevchenkivskyi district had risen to six. Rescuers pulled the bodies of a man and his wife from the rubble of the destroyed section.
State Emergency Service workers rescued 10 injured people, including a pregnant woman and a child. According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, there are a total of 19 injured in the city, with 8 of them hospitalized.
Rescue operations are still underway, and at least two more people may remain trapped under the rubble.
The State Emergency Service also noted that the work is complicated by trees in the area, which are being cut down to clear access. Search and rescue efforts continue across the capital.
At 12:46 a.m., the Kyiv City Military Administration reported on the work of the air defense forces. In the Solomianskyi district, debris hit a non-residential building.
Later, Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported one person injured in the Solomianskyi district, while the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said that, according to preliminary data, a missile had struck an apartment building in the Sviatoshynskyi district (as of 01:47 a.m., this was not confirmed); debris also fell in an open area there.
“We are also recording the consequences of the attack in the Darnytskyi district — preliminarily, no fire or casualties. In the Solomianskyi district, there’s a fire in the private sector,” Tkachenko wrote at 01:31 a.m.
At 01:40 a.m., Klitschko reported that two people were hospitalized in the Solomianskyi district.
At around 04:00 a.m., the Ukrainian Air Force reported that missiles were approaching the capital (according to monitoring channels, these were cruise missiles launched from Iskander-K ground launchers).
At 5:25 a.m., the Kyiv City Military Administration reported that Russian attacks damaged the infrastructure of the Sviatoshyn metro station. Exit No. 8 leading to Chornobaivska Square (Heroiv Brestu) toward the bridge is temporarily closed.
At 5:25 a.m., the State Emergency Service reported the consequences of the Russian attack on the capital:
- In the Shevchenkivskyi district, the ceilings of the 4th and 5th floors of a five-story building were damaged, with partial roof collapse. A fire broke out in cars in the building’s courtyard. Residents are being evacuated using an aerial ladder and a three-section ladder. So far, 7 people have been rescued, including one pregnant woman.
- Additionally, in the Solomianskyi district, a fire on the roof of a business center was extinguished at one address, while at another, a fire broke out in a four-story office building covering 800 square meters. Firefighting efforts are ongoing.
Strike on Kyiv region
Last night, the Kyiv region, specifically Bila Tserkva, was also hit by a Russian attack. The residential and medical infrastructure was damaged there.
As a result of the attack, one person was killed and eight were wounded. Two rescuers were injured while clearing up the aftermath of the strike.
“Emergency services were on the scene from the very first minutes of the tragedy. Rescue headquarters were organized. The necessary engineering equipment was deployed. Climbers are working,” said Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.
Among the injured, eight people were reported wounded. Three patients receiving treatment at the damaged medical facility sustained injuries: a woman born in 1966 with an open shin fracture; a 23-year-old man with extensive lacerations on his right shoulder and body abrasions; and a man born in 1958 with multiple traumas, the Kyiv Regional Military Administration said.
In Bucha district, a 78-year-old woman suffered an acute stress reaction and was hospitalized.
