Russian army fires over 1,200 missiles and drones at key energy facilities in Ukraine
Aiming to destroy Ukraine’s energy grid, invading Russian forces have fired more than 1,200 missiles and drones at key energy facilities in Ukraine
This was reported by Ukrenergo, the country's state-owned power grid operator, on Telegram.
"No European power system has ever experienced such a large-scale attempt to destroy it: more than 1,200 missiles and drones were fired by the Russians at key energy facilities. Unfortunately, more than 250 of them hit their targets, and 43% of the main power grids were damaged. All thermal and hydroelectric power plants were shelled and sustained varying degrees of damage," the statement said.
According to the World Bank and UNDP, the scale of damage to the Ukrainian power system is extraordinary: only the priority needs for the restoration and protection of Ukrenergo's high-voltage network this year amount to almost $1 billion.
"The enemy was concentrating on power plants and trunk grid facilities. Immediately after the air raid was over, repair crews went into action – we have more than 1,500 specialists at Ukrenergo alone. Backup circuits to restore power to consumers as soon as possible, extraordinary technical solutions to repair the damaged ones, thousands of hours of negotiations and searches in 40 countries to find a new one to replace the destroyed one," the statement said.
In addition, it is reported that Ukrenergo has already received almost 500 units of equipment from its European partners, and more is being manufactured and delivered to Ukraine. Thanks to the joint efforts, as of today, 80% of the damaged trunk power grid has been restored, albeit partially.
At the same time, Ukrenergo assured that power plants are now generating enough electricity to meet the needs of consumers, and the state of the networks allows them to avoid outages.
