Zelenskyy signals more prisoner swaps with Russia in works
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that several more rounds of prisoner swaps with Russia are planned as part of the agreements reached during the second round of talks with the Russian delegation in Istanbul
He shared the update on Telegram after receiving reports on both the completed swaps and those currently being prepared.
“We’re expecting several more rounds of prisoner swaps as part of the Istanbul agreements and are continuing our broader efforts to bring our people home—both military and civilian,” Zelenskyy wrote.
The process is being coordinated by the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council with the involvement of all key state agencies. Zelenskyy thanked Ukraine’s intelligence services, the Interior Ministry, the Security Service (SBU), the President’s Office, the Human Rights Ombudsman, and the Coordination Headquarters for their active role in preparing the swaps.
He noted that the pace of swaps significantly increased in the spring and summer. Among those released were individuals who had been missing in action, as well as some who were captured even before the full-scale invasion. Zelenskyy stressed that every name is being carefully verified.
He also highlighted the importance of providing rehabilitation for those freed and documenting Russian war crimes against Ukrainian prisoners.
- Currently, five camps for holding Russian prisoners of war are operating in Ukraine. And we have a sufficient exchange fund to continue prisoner swaps.
