Zelenskyy says Ukraine ready to sign minerals deal anytime
After a tense meeting with Trump, President Zelenskyy said it’s time to do everything right and reaffirmed Ukraine’s willingness to sign a security and minerals deal
He wrote about this on X.
"We do really value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence. And we remember the moment when things changed when President Trump provided Ukraine with Javelins. We are grateful for this.," Zelenskyy wrote.
The president commented on the meeting at the White House.
"Our meeting in Washington, at the White House on Friday, did not go the way it was supposed to be. It is regrettable that it happened this way. It is time to make things right. We would like future cooperation and communication to be constructive.
As for the agreement on minerals and security, Ukraine is ready to sign it at any time and in any convenient format. We view this agreement as a step toward strengthening security and ensuring reliable security guarantees, and I truly hope it will work effectively," he concluded.
Zelenskyy's visit to the U.S. and the dispute in the Oval Office
On February 8, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Washington on a working visit. During a press conference at the White House, before the planned signing of a framework agreement on mineral resources, a dispute arose between Trump, Zelenskyy, and U.S. Vice President Vance.
As a result, the joint press conference of Presidents Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump was canceled following the argument, the agreement was not signed, and Zelenskyy left the White House early.
After the dispute at the White House, European leaders and US politicians began expressing their support for Zelenskyy and Ukraine.
U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy "must come to his senses and return to the negotiating table with gratitude, or someone else should lead the country." U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said that his country would not provide Ukraine with money if it "does not strive for peace."
On Sunday, March 2, a summit of European leaders took place in London to discuss the protection of Ukraine and Europe from Russian aggression amid the new U.S. policy of geopolitical isolationism. Volodymyr Zelenskyy also participated in the summit. Summarizing the London summit, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that he and French President Macron were developing their own plan for resolving the Russia-Ukraine armed conflict as an alternative to the American approach.
Zelenskyy also met with King Charles III in the UK. On the night of March 2-3, he announced that he was returning home and summarized his visits to the U.S. and the UK.
On March 3, several media outlets reported, citing American officials, that Trump had ordered the suspension of all current military aid to Ukraine until he was convinced that the country’s leaders "demonstrate a genuine commitment to peace."
