Zelenskyy outlines conditions for meeting with Putin
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that he is open to negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but only after a clear plan for ending the war is agreed upon with Europe and the U.S.
He stated this during a briefing at the Munich Security Conference.
"I will not meet with the Russians, I don’t know if they are happy about it or not, but this is not part of my plans," Zelenskyy said.
"I will meet with only one Russian — Putin. Only after we have a joint plan with Trump, Europe... and we will sit down with Putin to stop the war. Only in this case, I am ready to meet," the president added.
During the Munich Security Conference, Zelenskyy also said that they are not discussing a peace agreement, but rather a plan to end the war.
Trump’s conversations with Putin and Zelenskyy
On February 12, U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone conversation with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.
According to Trump, Putin agreed that both of them want to "stop the millions of deaths occurring in the war between Russia and Ukraine."
Speaking to the media at the White House, Trump said that his meeting with Putin is most likely to take place in Saudi Arabia. However, he did not specify a possible date for the meeting.
On the same day, a phone conversation took place between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump. The President of Ukraine thanked him for his interest in what "we can do together," while the American leader informed his counterpart about the details of his conversation with Putin.
According to Trump, the conversation with Zelenskyy "went very well."
On February 13, following Trump’s conversation with Putin, the foreign ministers of France, Germany, Poland, Italy, the UK, Spain, Ukraine, and the EU issued a joint statement after their meeting in Paris.
European diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas stated that any negotiations with Russia must include Europeans and Ukrainians.
At the same time, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán declared that European officials were "making worthless statements" while commenting on the EU declaration, which stressed the need for Ukraine and Europe to be involved "in any negotiations." The same was said by Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico, calling Ukraine and the EU failures.
