Witkoff says Ukraine less concerned about its "Russian-speaking" regions
U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff stated that Ukraine can "worry less" about some of its "Russian-speaking" regions
He said this in a comment to the Wall Street Journal.
Witkoff stated that Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin was "obsessed" with Ukrainian territories during negotiations with him. According to him, Russia "might get some of the regions, but not all."
He suggested that Ukraine might "care less" about certain regions if they are predominantly "Russian-speaking."
“When you start looking at those five regions, Russia, they are important to you, and they are important to Ukraine. But if some of them are more Russian-speaking, won't they become less important (for Ukraine - Ed.)?” said Donald Trump's special representative.
Witkoff first mentioned the Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia in an interview with Tucker Carlson in March, although he initially gave the wrong number of regions and failed to recall most of their names.
Following such statements, Reuters reported that certain actions and remarks by the U.S. President's envoy regarding the resolution of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine drew criticism from the White House and among Republicans.
Recently, Witkoff stated on Fox News that a peace agreement would include a resolution concerning “the so-called five territories,” without specifying exactly what he meant.
