White House sends questionnaire to Europe on Ukraine’s security in case of ceasefire
The United States has asked European countries for proposals on security guarantees for Ukraine amid diplomatic efforts to find ways to end the war
Finland's President Alexander Stubb stated in a comment to Reuters at the Munich Security Conference that the U.S. had sent a questionnaire to European countries asking what could be implemented regarding security guarantees for Ukraine. He mentioned that this would make Europeans think and then decide whether to respond individually or together.
U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce also commented that the U.S. expects European partners to take a leading role in creating strong security frameworks and looks forward to their proposals, emphasizing that a strong, self-sufficient Europe aligns with both European and U.S. interests.
Previously, four European sources told Reuters that the U.S. had sent a document to European partners with questions, including the possibility of sending peacekeeping forces to Ukraine in the future. Two sources added that it was sent earlier this week. According to one European diplomat familiar with the document, the purpose is to understand how European allies view potential negotiation frameworks for ending the war and Europe's and the U.S.'s involvement. Another diplomat mentioned that the document contains six questions, one of which is specifically directed at EU member states.
- International journalist Mariana Prysiazhniuk observed that U.S. statements at the Munich Conference, along with coverage in Western media, seem like a coordinated pressure campaign to rattle their rivals.
