Ukraine's forces will have to withdraw: NGU reserve major on Vuhledar situation
Oleksii Hetman, a veteran of the Russian-Ukrainian war and a reserve major of the National Guard of Ukraine (NGU), emphasized that if Russian troops continue to devastate Vuhledar, holding the ruined town would be pointless

He shared his opinions with Espreso TV.
“The extensive use of guided bombs, combined with the forces the Russians have deployed, may compel the 72nd Brigade, which is defending Vuhledar, to retreat. If they don’t, they risk being encircled or semi-encircled,” Hetman stated.
According to Hetman, Russian forces are using a scorched earth tactic, which is classified as a war crime under international law.
“This violates the rules of war. You can’t take over territory by turning it into rubble. The scorched earth strategy is listed in international law as a war crime. If the Russians keep destroying the town, defending what’s left becomes meaningless,” Hetman emphasized.
- On September 24, DeepState reported that the occupying Russian army is trying to destroy Vuhledar, Donetsk region. The situation around the city is “critical and continues to deteriorate.”
- The Institute for the Study of War noted that capturing Vuhledar isn’t likely to give Russian forces any significant operational advantage for further offensives in western Donetsk.
- Serhiy Zgurets, a military expert, pointed out that Russian troops are conducting flanking maneuvers from the west and east around Vuhledar.
