U.S. may reevaluate its position if Russia stalls peace talks, says Rubio
Ukraine is ready for peace, and soon the U.S. will determine whether Russia is also willing to pursue peace. If Russia continues to stall talks, the U.S. stance may shift
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made this statement during a press conference following a meeting with NATO foreign ministers in Brussels.
He emphasized that Ukrainians have demonstrated their readiness to cease fire. Soon, “not in six months, but within weeks,” the United States will know whether Russia is willing to end the war.
He noted that the decision rested with Russia and Putin.
Rubio further stated that they were working to promote peace, but if Russia shows tactics of waiting and delaying, the U.S. would not be interested in them. He said that Trump would not fall into the trap of endless negotiations and added they would soon know whether Russia was serious about peace, and if so, it would be a positive development. However, if not, the U.S. would have to reassess its position and determine the next steps.
According to him, the U.S. will pay attention to actions rather than words.
- On April 3-4, NATO foreign ministers gathered in Brussels, where a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council also took place.
- Espreso correspondent Tetiana Vysotska reported that during the North Atlantic Council meeting at the foreign minister level, all states expressed support for Ukraine. Rubio, however, expressed concern and frustration on behalf of the United States regarding Russia's failure to comply with the terms of the ceasefire.
