U.S. delays delivery of Abrams tanks from Australia to Ukraine
Last year, Australia pledged to send decommissioned M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, but the U.S. is now likely delaying the delivery

Australian defense officials have partially blamed the delay in delivering M1A1 Abrams tanks on resistance from the United States.
More than six months after Australia first announced the transfer as part of its military aid package, journalists report that the aging army vehicles are still waiting for final U.S. approval to be shipped abroad.
The difficulties with the transfer first came to light in March after U.S. President Donald Trump temporarily froze military aid to Ukraine.
Australian Defense Ministry officials say the process now faces even greater uncertainty, as they have not yet received official U.S. permission to transfer the M1A1 Abrams tanks to another country.
- In October 2024, Australia announced it would transfer 49 decommissioned Abrams tanks to Ukraine as part of a new $245 million military aid package.
