U.S. warns of abandoning negotiation efforts if Russia continues war
On Thursday, May 29, the U.S. representative at the UN Security Council meeting stated that if Russia continues the war, negotiation efforts on their part may be suspended
He said this at a UN Security Council meeting on peace in Ukraine.
Acting U.S. Deputy Representative to the UN, John Kelley, warned that they would abandon peace efforts if Russia continues its war against Ukraine.
"To be clear, in doing so, we will not abandon our principles or our friends. Rather, we acknowledge Russia’s refusal to work with us toward a desired outcome," he explained.
Kelley emphasized that U.S. President Donald Trump had clearly expressed Washington’s willingness to cooperate with Russia, particularly on a peace initiative, as the current proposed deal is the best possible outcome for Russia, and President Putin should accept it.
"If one side proves unwilling or unable to do so, it will bear responsibility for the consequences," he added.
U.S. on possible sanctions against Russia
John Kelley noted that continuing the war serves no one’s interests, including Russia’s.
“It will further damage Russia’s economy, military resources, national security, and international reputation. Additional sanctions against Russia are still under consideration,” he stated.
Kelley stated that the U.S. condemns Russia’s decision to carry out one of the largest missile and drone strikes on Ukraine over the past weekend since the start of the war.
"Such disregard for human life does not demonstrate a desire for peace. It must stop," he added.
- President of the United States Donald Trump stated that he is unsure whether Russian leader Vladimir Putin wants to end the war, but if he is deceiving them, Washington will respond differently.
