UN announces "existential threat" to Ukraine
UN Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Jenča warns of an "existential threat" to Ukraine and calls the escalation a "direct threat to regional stability and international security"
The Voice of America reports.
According to him, the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia, initiated with gross violations of the UN Charter and international law, continues to inflict significant harm on the Ukrainian people.
He also emphasized that Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities in the past month have become a "daily destructive pattern," particularly targeting the energy infrastructure.
In addition, Jenča cited the number of casualties in March - at least 126 civilians killed and 478 wounded, which is "a 20 per cent increase compared with the previous month."
"This is unacceptable. Attacks on civilians and on civilian infrastructure are prohibited under international law. They must cease immediately, and we continue to condemn them, wherever they occur," he added.
- Ukraine's permanent representative to the UN, Sergiy Kyslytsya, said that Russia hits Ukrainian positions with ammunition only 3% of the time, while in 97% of cases Russia hits civilian cities and critical infrastructure.
