Ukrainian army receives 2S1 Gvozdika howitzers in possibly Finnish camouflage
A video circulating on social media shows the 67th Detached Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces using these 122 mm self-propelled artillery systems against Russian forces
The unique camouflage pattern on the equipment hints at its foreign origin, potentially indicating Finland's involvement.
The Finnish media Suomen Sotilas has speculated that Finland could have transferred a number of 2S1 Gvozdika howitzers, locally known as PSH 74, to Ukraine. This transfer might have occurred as the Finnish army gradually replaced these systems with South Korean K9 self-propelled artillery.
Finland originally acquired 74 of these systems from the former East Germany in the early 1990s, but The Military Balance 2023 reports that only 36 were still in service as of early last year.
This raises the possibility that Finland supplied Ukraine with 2S1 Gvozdika systems from its conserved stockpiles, although the exact number transferred remains uncertain. The timing of the transfer is also unclear, but speculation about Finland providing these systems to Ukraine first emerged in August 2023.
Additionally, it has been suggested that Finland might have also provided Ukraine with 2A36 Hyacinth-B howitzers, known locally as K89, and could potentially offer extra Buk and Hyacinth-S SAMs to bolster the Ukrainian military.
