Ukrainian Defense Forces repel 21 Russian attacks in Avdiivka sector — Genaral Staff

On January 28, 61 combat engagements took place at the frontline. Ukrainian Armed Forces are holding the line in southern Kherson region, where Russian troops made 7 unsuccessful assaults

Russia's attacks on Ukraine

The Russian army launched 6 missile and 2 air strikes, fired 51 times from multiple launch rocket systems at the positions of Ukrainian troops and populated areas. Unfortunately, Russian terrorist attacks have resulted in deaths and injuries among civilians. An educational institution, private and apartment buildings, and other civilian infrastructure were ruined and damaged.

Situation in key frontline areas

Over the last day, 61 combat engagements took place. The operational situation in eastern and southern Ukraine remains difficult.

In the northern areas bordering Belarus, the situation has not changed. No signs of the formation of offensive groups were detected. Certain units of the Belarusian armed forces are performing tasks in the areas bordering Ukraine.

On the north-eastern directions bordering Russia, the enemy maintains a military presence in the border areas, conducts sabotage and reconnaissance activities, shells settlements from the territory of the Russian Federation, and increases the density of minefields along the state border of Ukraine. It conducted an air strike near the village of Krasnyi Khutir in Chernihiv region. About 30 localities were shelled with artillery and mortar fire.

In the Kupyansk sector, Ukrainian defenders repelled an attack east of Pishchane, Kharkiv region, where the Russian forces unsuccessfully tried to break through the Ukrainian defense. More than 10 localities came under artillery and mortar fire.

In the Lyman sector, Ukrainian troops defeated 6 attacks near Terny and Yampolivka in Donetsk region. More than 10 settlements suffered from Russia's artillery and mortar attacks.

In the Bakhmut sector, the Defense Forces fought off two attacks in the area of Ivanivske in Donetsk region, where Russian troops tried to improve their tactical position without success. 

In the Avdiivka sector, Ukrainian soldiers beat back 16 attacks near Ocheretyne, Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, Avdiivka and another 5 attacks near Pervomayske and Nevelske in Donetsk region. More than 15 localities came under enemy artillery and mortar fire.

In the Marinka sector, Ukrainian defense forces are holding back the invaders in the areas of Heorhiivka, Pobieda and Novomykhailivka in Donetsk region. Russian army tried to improve their tactical position 18 times. They fired artillery and mortars at Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Pobieda, Novomykhailivka, and Paraskoviivka.

In the Zaporizhzhia sector, Ukrainian troops repelled an attack north of Pryiutne. Artillery and mortar attacks targeted over 15 towns and villages.

In the Kherson sector, the Russian military fired from multiple rocket launchers at the areas of Novotiahynka, Ivanivka, and Poniativka. The city of Kherson also suffered from Russian artillery shelling.  

Russian troops did not abandon their intention to drive Ukrainian units from their bridgeheads on the left bank of the Dnipro River. During the last day, the occupiers made 7 unsuccessful attempts to storm the positions of Ukrainian troops.

Ukrainian Defense Forces strikes at Russian positions


During the day, Ukrainian aviation struck 6 areas where hostile forces were concentrated. Ukrainian air defense units also destroyed one Kh-59 guided missile.

Rocket troops struck at 1 artillery unit and 1 Russian electronic warfare station.
