Ukraine’s parliament ratifies minerals agreement with United States
On Thursday, May 8, Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada ratified the minerals agreement between Ukraine and the United States
Espreso TV, citing MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak’s broadcast, reports that the Verkhovna Rada has ratified the agreement on critical minerals between Ukraine and the United States and approved the creation of an investment fund for Ukraine’s reconstruction. The draft law received support from 338 MPs, while 9 did not vote.
Ukraine and the United States signed an agreement on April 30 to establish the Ukraine Recovery Investment Fund.
Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal thanked MPs for ratifying the agreement.
According to Shmyhal, the agreement will help Ukraine gain a strategic investor (the United States), attract investment in its economy, accelerate recovery from the war, and receive modern technologies.
“Together we have made an important step towards the recovery of our economy, the strengthening of Ukraine, and the growth of people's welfare. At the same time, Ukraine's natural resources remain with Ukraine, and the state does not assume any debt obligations,” he said in a statement.
Shmyhal added that all technical work should be completed in the near future and a new stage of cooperation with the United States should begin.
- On May 6, the Verkhovna Rada Committee on International Policy supported the ratification of the agreement on cooperation with the United States in the field of mineral resources, both as a basis and as a whole.
