Ukraine's Security Service reported the information.

The SBU has located fragments of the Russian ballistic missile that the enemy used to strike the Lviv region on the night of January 8-9, 2026. According to preliminary information, the discovered components belong to the Oreshnik missile system.

Currently, the recovered parts include:

  • a stabilization and guidance unit (essentially the "brain" of the missile);
  • parts from the engine assembly;
  • fragments of the orientation mechanism;
  • nozzles from the post-boost vehicle platform, among others.

The fragments are being classified as material evidence and are being prepared for transfer to in-depth forensic examination.

SBU investigators are treating the use of this weapon against civilian infrastructure in Ukraine as a war crime by the Russian Federation.

According to preliminary data, the Oreshnik missile was launched from the Russian test site Kapustin Yar.

At this time, investigators are conducting a pre-trial investigation under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The SBU is establishing all circumstances, as well as identifying the organizers and perpetrators of this Russian war crime in order to bring them to justice.

  • Russia claims it used Oreshnik missiles during an overnight attack on Ukraine on January 9, allegedly in retaliation for a drone attack on Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's residence.
