Ukraine in talks for Gripen and Eurofighter jets – Defense Minister
Ukraine is negotiating with its allies to acquire Gripen and Eurofighter fighter jets
Defense Minister Rustem Umerov revealed this, according to Ukrinform.
"Right now, we have commitments from partners regarding the F-16s, an agreement for the Mirage jets, and ongoing consultations regarding the Gripen and Eurofighter fighters. It's an excellent lineup of platforms. We'll share results once we finalize them," Umerov stated.
He added that Ukraine’s priority is to strengthen its air defense capabilities.
"We've clearly communicated all our needs to our partners, emphasizing the critical nature of this issue. We are now focused on securing deliveries of the systems they will refurbish and upgrade," Umerov explained.
He noted that Russia currently operates around 300 planes and up to 300 helicopters.
"That's why we're providing specific numbers of brigades and aircraft we require. We're also justifying to our allies why we need certain platforms. Last year, our focus was on pilot training, obtaining platforms, and building essential infrastructure," he added.
This year, according to Umerov, the focus is on expanding the fighter fleet to gain air superiority over Russia.
"These processes are already in motion, but they need to be scaled up. We're working on that together with our partners. We've already got plans in the works," Umerov emphasized.
