Ukraine calls for peacekeeping forces on land, in sky and at sea – MFA
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhiy Tykhyi stated that Ukraine aims to expand the discussion on the deployment of foreign troops, not just on land, but also in the air and at sea
He made this statement at a briefing on March 7, as reported by RBC-Ukraine.
According to the spokesperson, discussions regarding the possibility of deploying a foreign contingent in Ukraine are still ongoing.
"In closed meetings, certain numbers are being mentioned. But these are just possible figures, as many unknowns remain regarding who should be deployed and where. We believe that it is very important to expand this discussion not only to the land but also to the sky and the sea," emphasized Tykhyi.
“This means their aircraft, their naval assets. This war has shown that it is unfolding in all planes, especially in the air, as we saw it at night,” he added.
For context, on the night of March 7, Russia launched missile and drone attacks on Ukraine. According to Ukraine’s Air Force, air defense forces shot down 34 Russian missiles and 100 drones.
The spokesperson noted several countries, not just in Europe, have expressed a hypothetical willingness to send their contingents to Ukraine. However, a broad consensus among various countries, including the United States, is necessary for deploying foreign troops.
The spokesperson emphasized that security in the air and at sea is just as important as the presence of military forces on land.
- On January 22, President Zelenskyy stated that at least 200,000 peacekeepers would be needed to secure Ukraine once the fighting ceases.
- He later clarified that U.S. military forces should be included among the peacekeeping contingent in Ukraine.
- On February 11, Zelenskyy mentioned that 100,000 to 150,000 European troops would be sufficient for Ukraine's security.
