Ukraine and Russia may resume ceasefire talks at the Vatican next week
On May 21, Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated that Ukraine and Russia are likely to continue technical-level ceasefire talks at the Vatican next week
This was reported by Yle.
According to President Stubb, technical negotiations between Ukraine and Russia regarding a ceasefire will likely take place at the Vatican next week.
He jokingly noted that the talks have moved to the “highest level” since they will be held at the Vatican and compared the peace process to a pendulum swinging between success and failure.
Stubb also rejected the notion that the United States has withdrawn from efforts to resolve the war in Ukraine and emphasized that, on the contrary, more mediators have joined. In his view, Europe’s involvement in ceasefire and peace talks is a positive development.
“They haven’t withdrawn. There are more mediators now. Previously, only the U.S. acted as a mediator, and now Europe is involved as well,” he said.
- Following a lengthy conversation with his American counterpart on May 19, Alexander Stubb stated that Donald Trump is losing patience with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
- Also on May 19, after speaking with Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine and Russia may sign a memorandum that could become the basis for a future peace agreement. However, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov responded that setting any deadlines for preparing such a memorandum is impossible.
