UK intelligence warns the Israel-Iran conflict may disrupt Russia’s military ties with Tehran despite offering a diversion from the war in Ukraine
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran presents strategic challenges for Russia, although the Kremlin also sees opportunities in the crisis, according to the latest British intelligence assessment published on the UK Ministry of Defence’s official X account.
While the situation complicates Russia’s position, the report notes that Moscow has no formal obligation to support Tehran militarily. The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement signed by Russia and Iran in January 2025 includes cooperation in various areas such as defense and security but stops short of committing either side to mutual military defense. This stands in contrast to Russia’s binding agreements with Belarus and North Korea.
British intelligence assesses that Russia likely sees the Israel-Iran conflict as a strategic distraction for the West, shifting international focus away from its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
However, the conflict could also carry significant drawbacks for Moscow. “The conflict will likely negatively impact the future provision of Iranian military equipment to Russia. Iran has supplied significant quantities of one-way attack uncrewed aerial systems (OWA UAS), provided extensive support to Russian OWA UAS domestic production, and supplied ballistic missiles and artillery munitions in support of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine,” the report states.
Iran has become a critical supplier of weapons to Russia, providing large numbers of attack drones, as well as ballistic missiles and artillery ammunition. Tehran has also played a key role in establishing drone production capabilities inside Russian territory.
- The direct military conflict between Israel and Iran, which do not share a border, is escalating and starting to involve other countries.
