Tusk says Poland could produce electricity for Ukraine at its thermal power plants
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that his country could produce electricity for Ukraine at its power plants if the European Union financed it

He said this at a briefing with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after signing a security agreement on July 8 in Warsaw.
"We are currently working to be able to burn Polish coal, of which we have a lot now, so that we do not have to pay for its combustion, that is, for emissions, and send electricity generated by Polish power plants from Polish coal for European money to Ukraine via the existing energy bridge," Tusk said.
He acknowledged that this would not solve Ukraine's problems completely, but "at least partially could help Ukraine to survive the difficult winter".
Tusk added that he would encourage European partners to "look for creative solutions" to support Ukraine's energy sector.
- As of 1 December 2023, the ENTSO-E network of transmission system operators increased its capacity to import electricity to Ukraine from 1.2 GW to 1.7 GW. Ukraine is currently importing the maximum possible amount of electricity.
- In April, Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, Chairman of the Board of NPC Ukrenergo, said that Ukraine's main problem now is the limitation of power supply to the power grid as a result of Russian attacks. "Therefore, imports in this particular situation will not save industrial consumers much, but they will be saved by some domestic generation that exists in this node, in this area," he explained.
