Trump urges Europe to lead on new Russia sanctions, saying they "cost U.S. a lot"
President Trump said European countries should lead on new Russia sanctions, calling them financially costly for the U.S.
He made this statement during a joint appearance with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, according to Radio Svoboda.
Trump noted that while Europe talks about sanctions, they have yet to act. He emphasized that sanctions are costly for the United States, involving vast sums of money. He also pointed out that imposing sanctions is a complex process that goes beyond signing documents and involves billions of dollars.
The U.S. leader said that sanctions are not as simple as just signing a document. He explained that it involves billions of dollars and is not a one-way street.
Trump explained his stance on new sanctions by expressing hope for a possible peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine.
He concluded by saying he is waiting to see if an agreement will be signed.
- Earlier, the Ukrainian president said that Vladimir Putin was only negotiating with Ukraine because of the threat of new sanctions. The Kremlin's goal is to “isolate” Kyiv.
