Trump suggests Russia's World Cup participation could end war
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that allowing Russia to participate in the World Cup could serve as an incentive for Moscow to end its war against Ukraine
Trump made this statement during a meeting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, according to BBC.
Under current regulations, Russia will not play in the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Qualification began in September 2023. In addition to the three host countries, 45 spots were available.
During the first meeting of his administration's working group on the 2026 World Cup, Trump said that Russia's return to the tournament could help end the war in Ukraine.
Sitting next to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Trump said he was unaware that Russia had been banned from the tournament.
"I didn't know that. Is that right?" Trump asked.
"That is right. They are banned for the time being from playing but we hope that something happens and peace will happen so that Russia can be readmitted," Infantino replied.
To which U.S. President Trump responded: "That's possible. Hey, that could be a good incentive, right?"
""We want to get them to stop. We want them to stop. Five thousand young people a week are being killed - it's not even believable," Trump added, referring to the Russians and the war in Ukraine.
- The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has allowed Russians and Belarusians to compete in team events under a "neutral" status.
