Trump deliberately took passive stance, letting crises worsen — U.S. journalist Ignatius
U.S. President Donald Trump is allowing the war between Ukraine and Russia to continue, likely in the hope that both sides will eventually become exhausted and more willing to negotiate
This was stated by American journalist David Ignatius during an interview on Espreso TV.
“It appears that Trump has deliberately adopted a passive stance, choosing not to intervene and instead allowing crises to escalate. He is letting Ukraine and Russia continue their fighting, likely expecting that, in time, both will be worn down and open to talks. As for the conflict between Israel and Iran, Trump seems eager to align himself with the Israelis as they gain the upper hand,” Ignatius said.
Ignatius added that when Trump spoke about "control of the skies," he was referring to the United States, even though the U.S. has not yet taken an active role in the conflict.
“In my experience covering international wars, every war eventually comes to an end. And the terms under which it ends are determined primarily by the determination and endurance of those doing the fighting. Whether in Ukraine or in the confrontation between Israel and Iran, the key factor is access to the weapons needed to defend against attacks and to withstand pressure during the most difficult phases of the conflict,” he said.
He believes the worst-case scenario for Ukraine would be a significant reduction or a complete halt of U.S. assistance.
“Does Ukraine have sufficient weapons from other sources to hold its current defensive lines? And in the case of Iran, will the Iranians have enough resilience to continue resisting despite Israel’s intense airstrikes? In my view, these are the key questions that will shape the future course of both conflicts,” Ignatius concluded.
