Trump exits negotiations
As I predicted, the biggest risk at the meeting in Istanbul was Trump walking out of the negotiations
So all his comments and calls to sit down for talks are exactly about this. He has realized that no peace agreement is possible, so he wants to declare victory by having everyone at the negotiating table. And then, it’s like, it’s their own fault.
Although he continues in his usual style to say everything is fine, Vance said instead that a deadlock has formed. Essentially, preparing the ground for the US to step away from talks about peace and negotiations.
“The battle over Trump is currently ending in a draw. Yes, our negotiators could have gone to Istanbul and declared that the Russians sabotaged the talks. That would have put Trump in a tricky spot, where he’d likely have to impose sanctions to secure the 30-day ceasefire he promised.”
Instead, our side said things aren’t that bad and agreed to keep talking, gaining a chance to exchange 1,000 prisoners. I wouldn’t wish anyone to face such a difficult choice.
The draw in the battle over Trump means Russia avoids harsh sanctions and pressure, and we stop being the scapegoats in the peace process. There will be no more “peace coercion.” Weapons will be supplied through the fund and EU funding.
The war will go on until Putin either dies or runs out of steam. And that now depends on oil prices and the broader situation.
The chaos of pushing for a peace deal is shifting into chaos over demanding talks and compromise. But there’s some good news - all chaos eventually ends, and it seems this phase might be ending soon too.
